Based in Berlin, DNS:NET is a leading local Internet Service Provider (ISP) that delivers high-speed internet services through an extensive fiber network across urban and rural regions. Since its early fiber deployments, DNS:NET has worked with Genexis to leverage their FiberTwist Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The result is a highly flexible and scalable network infrastructure that supports DNS:NET’s rapidly growing residential and business customer base.

With Genexis, the worries that we have to change ONTs in the field if we decide on a different OLT vendor are gone. Genexis is interoperable with the vendors we currently use and all the major ones in the market.

DNS:NET offers typical triple-play services, including analog TV and IPTV solutions, to residential customers, along with professional services to business customers. Due to their success in Berlin, DNS:NET was selected as a network operator and ISP for two large governmental-funded deployments in the North-Eastern part of Germany, further expanding the number of customers.

Scaling fiber networks with user-friendly FiberTwist

Abel Enghy, the Network Engineering Team Lead at DNS:NET, highlights how the journey with Genexis began several years ago when the ISP started selling fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections. Enghy explains, “One of the most important aspects for us when selecting ONTs was scalability. We needed a solution that was quick and scaled well. Genexis was already advanced then and manufacturing the devices.” This led to FiberTwist.

FiberTwist is a unique and patented ONT with a Do-It-Yourself concept. The device’s twist-on mechanism makes installation simple and requires minimal customer technical support. It is intuitive and user-friendly, enabling customers to install and activate their connections easily.

According to DNS:NET, customer satisfaction with FiberTwist is high. “As soon as someone sees the FiberTwist boxes, customers immediately know how to handle them. It’s quite straightforward,” describes Enghy.

Overcoming tech hurdles with interoperability

DNS:NET operates in a complex environment that uses multiple Optical Line Terminal (OLT) vendors, and interoperability between OLTs and ONTs is crucial. FiberTwist’s autosensing software, TrueTalk, eliminates the need for DNS:NET to manage multiple firmware versions, streamlining logistics and device management. TrueTalk detects the OLT vendor and line card and adapts.

DNS:NET’s CTO, Volker Rau, says, “With Genexis, the worries that we have to change ONTs in the field if we decide on a different OLT vendor are gone. Genexis is interoperable with the vendors we currently use and all the major ones in the market.”

This universal compatibility and flexibility allow DNS:NET to deploy FiberTwist devices without vendor lock-in.

Reliable tech support

For DNS:NET, the collaboration with Genexis is about more than just technology—it’s about the responsive support Genexis provides. Enghy recounts a specific case where Genexis’ support proved invaluable, “We had some issues with different vendors, and Genexis recreated the scenario we were trying to do and assisted us in resolving it. This would have affected thousands of customers in our network.”

The strong relationship and responsive support that DNS:NET receives ensures they can swiftly address technical issues and continue to deliver reliable service to their customers.

Future-proofing for next-gen fiber

As DNS:NET continues to expand, they are embracing new fiber technologies like XGS-PON to increase network capacity and meet growing demand. Enghy emphasizes the importance of FiberTwist’s modular design for long-term planning,

“This one device can actually serve all of our different technologies. We started with Point-to-Point (PtP) parallel with GPON and are now looking at XGS-PON. We can then literally configure anything that we want for our customers.”

FiberTwist’s scalability allows DNS:NET to deploy devices in various scenarios and configurations. By keeping FiberTwist’s base design, DNS:NET ensures that customers can seamlessly transition between different types of fiber connections without needing new equipment or major reconfigurations. This means significant cost savings, fewer service calls, and smoother logistics overall.

The collaboration between DNS:NET and Genexis highlights how a modular, flexible solution can drive rapid growth in fiber infrastructure. With an innovative solution and exceptional technical support, Genexis has enabled DNS:NET to overcome technical challenges, scale efficiently, and meet the needs of a diverse customer base. Enghy sums it up, “We are happy that we have a good connection with Genexis, and we hope that we will continue our work together.” As DNS:NET expands its network, Genexis continues to support DNS:NET’s mission to deliver high-speed, reliable fiber connectivity.
