As we look toward 2026, many key broadband trends from 2025 will carry on in the coming years. From optimizing existing networks and infrastructure to AI and security, Gerlas van den Hoven, CEO of Genexis, summarizes 2025 and shares his outlook for 2026.

Wrapping up 2025

Business as usual

2025 can be summarized as a year of transition for fiber broadband. Geopolitical tensions created uncertainty that affects the global economy and influences investment. We saw slower investment in fiber infrastructure as several markets matured. It has been a year where the industry has settled into “business as usual,” with fewer growth spikes across markets.

From passing to activating homes

What we saw instead is the industry’s move away from simply passing homes to truly activating them. With many markets now reaching high coverage levels, the focus is shifting to driving adoption, improving the end-user experience, and ensuring that end users actually benefit from the networks built around them. This transition reflects a more value-driven phase of FTTH, where quality of service and customer activation are as important as network growth.

Leveraging existing infrastructure: the MDU opportunity

A key part of this shift is making better use of existing infrastructure, especially in multi-dwelling units (MDUs). Millions of potential subscribers already live in buildings where fiber is nearby but not fully utilized. By tapping into existing in-building wiring and simplifying installation, operators can convert these “near-ready” buildings into active fiber homes more efficiently. MDUs offer a cost-effective growth path, transforming coverage into actual customers and real value. At Genexis, in 2025, we partnered with Positron Access Solutions to provide Positron’s leading MDU ONT solution under the Genexis FiberBridge name in select markets. This solution enables broadband providers to use a single solution for all legacy cabling within an apartment building, delivering a fiber-like experience to every unit.

AI relies on broadband

AI is everywhere. While some compare today’s AI excitement to the dot-com bubble, one thing is clear: AI is not a passing fad. It’s here to stay and will keep transforming how societies, industries, and individuals function.

But behind every AI innovation lies a simple truth: AI cannot operate without robust broadband. The AI models, applications, and cloud-based intelligence we rely on are only as effective as the networks that support them. Broadband, especially fiber, is one of the critical engines driving AI applications and innovation forward.

Outlook for 2026: Efficiency, cybersecurity, and AI

Efficiency and openness take center stage

In 2026, there will be increased focus on efficient, resilient networks. Network operators and service providers will prioritize solutions that reduce installation time, simplify operations, and lower costs. Do-it-yourself (DIY) installations will remain in demand. At Genexis, we recently marked the 10th anniversary of our DIY FiberTwist ONT, featuring its patented twist mechanism and award-winning autosensing software, TrueTalkTM

The demand for openness and interoperability will continue to grow. Network operators and service providers are looking for flexibility rather than vendor lock-in. Open standards and interoperable products are crucial for maximizing network ROI. To enable interoperability, our single autosensing software, TrueTalk, and our Genexis PON ONTs automatically detect and connect to all the different OLTs in your network.

Cybersecurity: more layers, more importance

As networks become more open and interconnected, cybersecurity is more vital than ever. The use of multi-layer security protocols strengthens network resilience. In 2026, companies will keep investing in strong, future-ready security architectures, balancing openness with protection to safeguard both infrastructure and end users.

At Genexis, we recently achieved ISO27001 certification, the internationally recognized standard for information security management. This milestone demonstrates our dedication to protecting data, managing risks, and ensuring the highest level of trust for our customers and partners.

AI drives demand and opportunity

AI will continue to reshape the digital landscape in 2026, requiring better network performance. As AI becomes increasingly interactive, from real-time recommendation engines to conversational interfaces and smart home coordination, demand for high-speed, low-latency connectivity will intensify.

At the same time, operators and vendors will explore how AI can enhance their own operations: predictive maintenance, automated customer support, optimized Wi-Fi performance, and proactive network intelligence.

Sustainability stays on the agenda

Despite varying political perspectives, sustainability remains a business priority. Companies recognize that long-term success depends on reducing reliance on limited resources, improving energy efficiency, and sourcing materials locally where possible.

Sustainability is not just good for the environment; it also offers strategic benefits: shorter lead times, lower transportation costs, and stronger supply chain resilience. At Genexis, we embed sustainability into product design from the outset and evaluate all aspects of circularity, including repair, refurbishment, and disassembly. We are also recognized for our leadership in sustainability, having received the EcoVadis Gold medal three consecutive years. Genexis ranks in the top 2% of companies rated globally and is now acknowledged as a leader in carbon management.
